Children's Miracle Network Hospitals

Dairy Queen loves kids. Whether its little league teams celebrating at our restaurants after games, children enjoying dinner with their parents, or teenagers visiting for cool treats at the end of a date, Dairy Queen and kids go hand in hand. And, if these cherished youngsters ever became sick or injured, we want to help assure they have the best medical care available.

That's why the Dairy Queen system has been a proud national sponsor of Children's Miracle Network
Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) since 1984. During the past 28 years, Dairy Queen operators throughout the United States and Canada have raised more than $91 million for CMN Hospitals. From collecting customers' pocket change, to selling paper Miracle Balloons and holding special events, our support enables us to give something back to the communities in which we do business.

Children's Miracle Network Hospitals is an international non-profit organization dedicated to generating funds and awareness programs to benefit kids treated at 170 children's hospitals throughout North America. CMN Hospitals raises funds through innovative cause-marketing promotions and other programs developed to meet the business objectives of its sponsors. CMN  Hospital's hallmark is that 100 percent of locally generated donations stay in the community to benefit kids treated at the local CMN Hospital.

CMN Hospitals represent the premier pediatric healthcare facilities in their respective communities, treating children of all afflictions, including cancer, birth defects, accidents and muscular and cardiovascular diseases. These facilities, which provide care based on filling the needs of families rather than on their ability to pay, treat more than 17 million kids each year.

Dairy Queen and Children's Miracle Network Hospitals are a perfect fit.

         Lindsey's Miracle Story

       Lindsey

Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Champion Child Lindsey, age 17, is the daughter of DQ® franchisee Tony. She inspires everyone she meets with her positive attitude and courageousness in her battle against cancer. Watch her story here.

Lindsey Lourenco |Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
| BC Children’s Hospital Foundation (BCCHF)

Tony was touched by what he saw on a Dairy Queen® tour of the Oncology Unit of BC Children's Hospital. He and his wife, Darlene, both successful Dairy Queen® operators, were thankful that their 12-year-old twin daughters, Lindsey and Sadie, had always been healthy. A few weeks later, he and his family left on a much-anticipated trip to Portugal.

Upon arrival, Lindsey became sick. Her condition continued to worsen over the course of their holiday. She developed an unually high fever and lost an alarming amount of weight. Tests at a local hospital confirmed the family's worst nightmare - Lindsey had cancer (leukemia) and needed to begin treatment immediately.

Tony recalled his tour of the BC Children's Oncology Unit just a few weeks earlier and he knew it was where his daughter needed to be. Within 48 hours, an air ambulance arrived in Portugal from BC Cbildren's hospital with appropriate staff who stabilized Lindsey. They began the trip back to British Columbia, Canada which took them 2 days because of how serious her condition was.

After several treatments, the Lourenco family thought they had conquered Lindsey's leukemia. Unfortunately 1.5 years ago, Lindsey relapsed - the leukemia was back. This time it was so severe that the only way she could fight it was to have a bone marrow transplant. After months of searching for a donor, they were fortunate to locate a match.

After Tony's personal family experience, he started thinking about how Dairy Queen could raise more money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. His idea... Cakes for Miracles! This program commits $1 from each cake sale to a local children's hospital. Tony developed this program and dedicated it to his daughter Lindsey. When we shared this idea with our leadership franchisees across the the country, they immediately asked to have it printed and shipped to everyone.

To recognize Lindsey's determination and tenacity, BC Children's Hospital Foundation names her the 2012 Children's Miracle Network Champion child. As a participant in the Champions program presented by Walmart Canada, Lindsey is an ambassador for her children's hospital and helps to spread the word about the great work done at her local children's hospital.
