  1. The Dairy Queen® System Makes a Smoothie Move

Orange Julius® Premium Fruit Smoothies and Orange Julius Originals

to roll out to all DQ® locations

MINNEAPOLIS – In a merger of two iconic brands, the Dairy Queen® system is rolling out Orange Julius® Premium Fresh Fruit Smoothies and Julius® Originals to all DQ® locations in the United States and Canada.

“With an assortment of fruit choices, variety and convenience we will offer in this beverage category, it will be like having a smoothie shop within a DQ restaurant,” said Barry Westrum, executive vice president of Marketing for American Dairy Queen Corporation “This is a perfect addition to our menu for customers who want a healthier quick snack or a treat at any time of the day.”

Orange Julius Premium Fruit Smoothies and Julius Originals will be rolled out to more than 4,000 Dairy Queen locations in the U.S. and Canada by November. Currently more than 800 DQ Orange Julius stores in the U.S. and Canada, most of which are mall locations, carry Orange Julius beverages.

“We are looking to shake up not only the $3 billion smoothie category in the U.S. but also our competition,” said Westrum. “Just like there is only one DQ brand, there is only one Orange Julius brand.”

Customers will have a choice between Orange Julius Premium Fruit Smoothies and Julius Originals. The Orange Julius Premium Fruit Smoothies are made with real fruit and low-fat yogurt, and are blended fresh for customers upon ordering. The refreshing, frothy real fruit Julius Originals are also blended fresh. Flavors for both Julius Originals and premium Fruit Smoothies include Orange, Strawberry, Strawberry Banana, Tripleberry and Mango Pineapple.

"Adding Orange Julius Premium Fruit Smoothies and Julius Originals to all Dairy Queen locations fits with our strategy to keep our menu fresh and enhances not only our beverage offerings and menu appeal but also our competitive advantage," added Westrum. “There is no substitute for the irresistible and inexplicable taste found in Orange Julius drinks.”

International Dairy Queen, Inc. acquired the Orange Julius concept, famous for its frothy fruit blended beverages, in 1987, but the highly popular brand has been around for more than 85 years. The original began with Julius Freed, who operated an orange juice stand in Los Angeles. His friend Bill Hamlin liked oranges, but they upset his stomach. So Bill decided to blend his orange juice with a few choice ingredients that made it less acidic. Bill introduced the drink to Julius who then began selling the frothy, delicious beverage to customers. Soon fans were shouting, “Give me an orange, Julius!” Sales escalated and the name of an original was born.

“Consumers have told us they are looking for a premium branded fruit smoothie and beverage option in the sea of low quality smoothies available today,” states Westrum, when asked why the DQ system was introducing Orange Julius beverages. “The Orange Julius concept has stood for premium blended fruit beverages for more than 70 years, so the time is right.”

  3. The Dairy Queen® System Combines Two American Favorites

MINNEAPOLIS – In a summer filled with new and innovative treats, the Dairy Queen® system once again introduces a one-of-a-kind Blizzard® Treat in August with a new M&M'S® Brownie as the Blizzard of the Month flavor.

The decadent M&M'S® Brownie Blizzard Treat is an explosion of chocolate flavors with a combination of M&M'S chocolate candy pieces and moist, chewy brownie pieces that are blended with creamy DQ® vanilla soft serve and crowned with chocolaty topping. The product meets the consumer interest in brownie combinations as well as branded candies.

In August, the Dairy Queen system also will feature a Cheeseburger Lovers deal, which is two singles for $3 and two doubles for $4.

“In the DQ system, it’s the summer of Blizzard Treats and burgers,” said Barry Westrum, executive vice president of Marketing for American Dairy Queen Corporation (ADQ). “We are feeding the consumer need for value, innovation and variety for lunch, dinner, snack time or late night.”

Since then, one-of-a-kind flavors such as Nutter Butter®, Triple Chocoholic, Midnight Truffle, Turtle Oreo®, Confetti Cake and Double Fudge Cookie Dough have delighted Dairy Queen fans as part of the featured Blizzard of the Month program, which began in 2003.

  20. The Dairy Queen® System Rolls Out National TV Advertising Campaign

The Dairy Queen® System Rolls Out National TV Advertising Campaign

MINNEAPOLIS (April 5, 2012) The Dairy Queen® system, known for iconic treats such as the one of a kind Blizzard® Treat, has rolled out a new national television advertising campaign this month that depicts everyday people in real life situations, but with a “riDQulous” twist.

The campaign builds on the momentum of last year’s “So Good It’s RiDQulous®” brand restage and kicked off this month with the first of five new live action spots created by Grey New York.

The initial commercial opens with a businessman who clones himself so that while he is enjoying the Chicken Strip Basket at a Dairy Queen restaurant, his clone can continue working at the office. But he discovers that his clone also has cloned himself a few more times and all of them have arrived at the DQ® restaurant for lunch too. A humorous dialogue ensues.

“The Dairy Queen brand is the difference between good and unbelievable and that comes across in a big way in our commercials,” said Barry Westrum, executive vice president of Marketing at American Dairy Queen Corporation (ADQ). “The Dairy Queen brand is fun and a special place in the community for sharing smiles and stories with family and friends.”

The spot that airs in May promoting the new Confetti Cake Blizzard Treat (available in May) opens with the camera panning across a little league baseball team sitting in a booth at a Dairy Queen restaurant. They are enthusiastically celebrating their championship win, passing around the trophy and enjoying Confetti Cake Blizzard Treats. The camera then pans to the next booth where a team of grizzly bears is also enjoying Confetti Cake Blizzard Treats. In a humorous twist, instead of raising a trophy in their victory celebration, the bears are hoisting a park ranger.

“When it comes to summer in America, there are few brands as iconic as the DQ system,” said Tor Myhren, president and chief creative officer of Grey New York. “Let’s face it, they have the best soft serve and treats on the planet. As the tagline says, ‘So Good, It’s RiDQulous.’”

In another commercial that airs in June for the new Sweet Apple BBQ GrillBurger™ (available in June), a couple who found each other through an online dating service meets for the first time at a Dairy Queen restaurant. He is not at all what she expected from his profile and she shares her inner thoughts in a comical musical parody with the audience, but not with him.

The national television ad campaign runs through September. For more information about the Dairy Queen system, visit the Web site at DairyQueen.com.

The Dairy Queen system ushers in spring with a new Blizzard® Treat,

re-introduced Frozen Hot Chocolate beverage and a popular meal deal

MINNEAPOLIS – With gas prices rising like the temperature around the country, the Dairy Queen® system has announced new and re-introduced menu additions that offer value for consumers and cool treats to beat the unseasonably warmer weather.

Available throughout April, the Dairy Queen system celebrates with a value-priced $3.99 special for its signature Chicken Strip Basket, the debut of the Caramel Delight Pie Blizzard Treat as the Blizzard of the Month and the re-introduction of Frozen Hot Chocolate.

“The menu additions in April, which will be supported by national advertising, really emphasize the duality of the Dairy Queen brand,” said Lane Schmiesing, vice president of Product & Brand Marketing for American Dairy Queen Corporation (ADQ). “We are helping customers beat the prices at the pump with value propositions like our $3.99 Chicken Strip Basket and we’re offering two cool treats that are designed to beat the heat they are feeling outdoors.”

The Chicken Strip Basket is value priced for the month at $3.99 and offers white meat chicken strips with French fries and Texas toast. It’s one of the most popular items on the Dairy Queen menu.

MINNEAPOLIS – International Dairy Queen, Inc. (IDQ), part of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A and BRK.B), opened 272 new DQ Grill & Chill®, Dairy Queen®, DQ® Orange Julius® and Orange Julius locations in 2011. These new openings created approximately 5,000 jobs.

Everyone has a story to share about his or her DQ experience. This brand has an incredibly strong heritage.”

In 2012, Gainor expects the positive growth trend to continue. “We are projecting significant growth internationally, particularly in China,” he says. “Also, in the United States and Canada, there is a tremendous opportunity for us to continue growing this brand. It is one of the most beloved brands and our customers are passionate and loyal.”

The Dairy Queen® System is Set to Make Miracles on July 26

DQ® Miracle Treat Day Will Benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®

MINNEAPOLIS – Seven years ago the Dairy Queen® system hosted the first-ever combined U.S. and Canadian Miracle Treat Day and since then it has become one of summer's most celebrated events. On Thursday, July 26 communities throughout the U.S. and Canada once again will come together to make miracles and support children in need during the 7th Annual DQ® Miracle Treat Day. That day, participating Dairy Queen locations will donate $1 or more from every Blizzard® Treat sold to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®, a charity that raises funds to help save and improve the lives of kids treated at 170 children’s hospitals across North America.

“When we first decided to host a system-wide event that would involve the entire Dairy Queen family, we had no idea how much impact it would have and how it would grow in size and popularity each year," said John Gainor, president and CEO of International Dairy Queen, Inc. (IDQ). "Miracle Treat Day has become such a celebration of life and hope, as well as a fundraiser that draws support from local communities of families, neighbors, friends and people from all walks of life who are so eager to help the children in their cities and towns who need it the most. The Dairy Queen system really pulls out all the stops to make this event successful each year and we thank everyone who supports us."

Last year, Dairy Queen locations across the U.S. and Canada raised more than $5 million on Miracle Treat Day for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Since 1984, the Dairy Queen system has raised more than $90 million through fundraising efforts including Miracle Treat Day, the Miracle Balloon campaign and other local initiatives, and proudly is one of the top 10 contributors to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Oreo®, still the most popular Blizzard Treat flavor of all time, will be featured as the Miracle Treat Day “Blizzard of the Day.” New Blizzard of the Month flavor Chocolate Candy Shop as well as all currently available flavors at that time also will be available on Miracle Treat Day.

The incredible popularity of the Blizzard Treat brand is what led the Dairy Queen system to initiate the Blizzard Fan Club in 2005 and the Dairy Queen Facebook fan page in 2008. ANDOVER, Minn. – Alicia Jindra of Andover, the esteemed cake decorator at the Dairy Queen® restaurant located at 3595 River Rapids Dr. NW in Coon Rapids, placed first in the Dairy Queen system’s “Iron Tip” Cake Decorating International Competition. Jindra competed as a DQ® master cake decorator against four other finalists from around the world.

More than 1,500 photos of the best cakes made by 223 Dairy Queen decorators were submitted during the two-round preliminary competition. Entries were judged on color scheme, placement of decorations, cake borders, decorative writing and overall appearance. The final competition took place at the DQ 2012 Expo January 12-15 in San Diego.

“Cake decorating is an art form, and it’s a great feeling to see your work of art come to life – from transforming the initial idea to an original, edible masterpiece,” said Jindra. “I am honored to have represented the Coon Rapids Dairy Queen restaurant and to have been named champion of the Iron Tip Cake Decorating Competition.”

Patterned after the Iron Chef competition on Food Network, the Iron Tip challenge finals featured Jindra and her competitors decorating three different cakes: one design the contestants did not know in advance; one design the contestants were notified of in advance; and a design created by the contestants using decorating components provided to them.

Other finalists were: Jane Blackburn of Port Republic, Va.; Helen Marsolais of Burlington, Ontario; Theresa Le of Brampton, Ontario; and Florence Natalina of Jakarta, Indonesia.
