Lindsey’s Miracle Story
Lindsey Lourenco’s story first began in 2007 when she arrived in Portugal with her family while on vacation. Upon her arrival, Lindsey became ill and her condition became worse over the course of their holiday. Tests at a local hospital would confirm the family’s worst nightmare, Lindsey was diagnosed with leukemia. The Lourenco family would need to immediately head home to start treatment for Lindsey.
Within 48 hours of the diagnosis, an air ambulance arrived in Portugal from BC Children’s Hospital, where they stabilized Lindsey in order to bring her home. Lindsey and her family would spend several years in and out of the BC Children’s Oncology Unit, bravely battling leukemia and the other health implications it caused. Finally, Lindsey received a bone marrow transplant, and although it was successful for a while, the cancer came back several times.
After six courageous years of experiencing the highs of overcoming cancer and the challenge of having it return, Lindsey passed away March 14, 2013 at 18 years of age.
The Lourenco family experienced first-hand, the crucial care provided by the medical team at the BC Children’s Oncology Unit, and they felt the desire to help other children in need of their local Children’s Miracle Network® member hospital. Lindsey and her twin sister Sadie created Cakes for Miracles and executed the campaign in their father’s DQ® restaurant.
Lindsey and Sadie’s successful idea lead to the creation of Lindsey’s Cakes for Miracles™ where $1.00 from every DQ Cake sold at participating DQ locations during the weeks leading up to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day would be donated to Children’s Miracle Network. Lindsey’s Cakes for Miracles™ was born…
